⚡ Dubai bulk carrier · emergency seawater-pipe replacement
Project Background
A bulk carrier berthed in Dubai found multiple leaks in its central-cooling seawater line, with some sections badly corroded. After assessment, the technical team decided on an emergency replacement during cargo operations. The owner searched worldwide for a supplier that could deliver high-quality replacement pipe in a very short time, while keeping strictly within budget.
Challenges & Requirements
The project faced two core challenges:
Local quotes too high & lead times too long
Local Dubai yards and pipe suppliers quoted new seawater pipe far above the owner's budget, with lead times generally over 4 weeks — too long for the vessel's departure plan.
Accuracy concerns & a tight window
The owner faced a dilemma: accept the high local price, or sail on with a known defect until the next window. The replacement pipe also had to match the existing interfaces precisely, and the owner worried a remote supplier could not guarantee dimensional accuracy.
The client's core needs: a very short lead time + precise interface matching + a highly competitive cost
The Irwin Solution
On receiving the request, Irwin immediately sent a surveyor aboard, scanning each pipe to be replaced with the Automet system in the gaps between cargo operations — without disrupting loading. The data was returned to the Shenzhen engineering centre the same day and turned into manufacturing drawings. The Shenzhen workshop started production and PE lining at once, and once complete the spools were air-freighted express to Dubai.

Results
Total procurement cost more than 50% below the local Dubai-yard option
From on-site survey to spools arriving in Dubai in just 2 weeks — fully meeting the vessel's departure plan
On arrival the spools passed pressure testing first time — zero leaks, flanges perfectly aligned
The owner has since made Irwin a preferred pipe supplier, entrusting Irwin with seawater-pipe replacement on several more vessels
✅ Cost halved — total procurement cost more than 50% below the local Dubai-yard option.
✅ Rapid delivery — from on-site survey to spools arriving in Dubai in just 2 weeks, fully meeting the departure plan.
✅ Precise fit — on arrival the spools passed pressure testing first time, zero leaks, flanges perfectly aligned.
✅ Ongoing partnership — the owner has since made Irwin a preferred pipe supplier.
Client Value
This project proved the remote-prefabrication model is reliable even under an extreme time window. The client not only saved substantial money but discovered a pipe-supply route unconstrained by the vessel's location — wherever the ship calls, Irwin can survey quickly and deliver on time. That gives owners real flexibility and bargaining power in managing maintenance budgets across a global fleet.
