Material Selection for SOx/NOx Scrubbers: Why PE Roto-Lined Steel Offers Superior Corrosion Resistance and Cost Efficiency
Selecting a scrubber-piping material is a system-engineering decision. PE roto-lined steel separates the structural duty of the steel carrier pipe from the corrosion-barrier duty of the polyethylene lining, but it remains suitable only where the verified operating envelope and project specification support its use.
Start with the design basis
The comparison should record normal and upset temperature, process chemistry, solids, pressure or vacuum, pipe movement, external loads, access, inspection requirements and the applicable owner and classification rules. These inputs determine whether a polymer-lined system should remain in the option set.
Compare complete piping systems
A useful comparison considers the carrier pipe, lining, end details, branches, flanges, supports, prefabrication, inspection, transport, installation access and maintainability together. Comparing raw material prices alone does not establish the installed cost or service suitability of a scrubber-piping solution.
Where PE roto-lined steel may fit
- The steel carrier can provide the required structural and mechanical capacity.
- The continuous lining can isolate the steel from the specified process medium.
- Defined spools can be surveyed, detailed and prefabricated for the vessel or yard installation scope.
- Inspection and testing requirements can be specified for the completed lined spool.
Verification before selection
The proposed grade, thickness, interfaces and fabrication method should be checked against the full design envelope. Final selection remains project-specific and subject to the owner, designer, manufacturer and classification requirements.
